HEARNE - In the heart of Hearne High School's athletic program, a remarkable journey is unfolding under the leadership of Coach Anthony Gonzales. With a decade of dedicated service to Hearne High School and seven years as the Head Girls’ Basketball Coach, Coach Gonzales and his team achieved a historic milestone last year, making them a beacon of pride for the entire community.
What sets the Hearne Lady Eagles apart is their commitment to the concept of being a family, a sentiment often heard but seldom lived up to in sports programs across America. The coaching staff embodies this ethos, with deep-rooted relationships that transcend the boundaries of professional roles. Coach Anthony Gonzales himself is a Hearne graduate, a testament to his enduring connection to the school. Adding to the family atmosphere, his sister, Meghan McCloud, serves alongside him on the coaching staff. But the bonds extend even further; Latavia Smith, another assistant coach, shares a history with Hearne as a proud graduate of the school. Coach McCloud expressed the significance of the shared journey between her and Coach Smith, saying, "It is something special to be able to walk down these same halls, to coach in the same gym I played in, but it's even more special to do it with your brother and a former teammate." This unique coaching staff boasts not only a brother-sister duo but also former teammates among their ranks, reinforcing the close-knit nature of the Hearne Lady Eagles' basketball program.
Last year marked a new age in Hearne's sports history as Coach Gonzales and his team became the first girls' basketball team from Hearne to qualify for the state tournament. This achievement not only brought glory to the school but also reinforced the sense of unity and camaraderie that defines the Hearne Lady Eagles. It was a journey filled with emotion, notably for assistant coach, Hannah Hancock, who plays a pivotal role, and is often seen as a second head coach. "Hannah was nervous in those regional tournament games, she just cares, and pours so much into this program," Coach Smith explains. "We wanted it bad for those seniors. We wanted that happiness for those seniors and for the town," she adds.
Coach Gonzales acknowledges the invaluable contributions of his assistant coaches saying, "Great programs don't run without great assistants," In return, Coach Smith and his other assistant coaches wanted to be quoted saying, “He is the best coach we have ever had.” The success achieved under Coach Anthony Gonzales is not just about victories on the court but also about fostering a sense of belonging and unity among the players and staff. As they continue to make history and inspire future generations of Hearne athletes, the Lady Eagles are a shining example of how sports can build lasting connections within a community.
Coach Gonzales and his dedicated team have not only put Hearne on the map but have also etched their names in the hearts of those who call Hearne their home. Their journey is a testament to the power of unity, shared history, and the pursuit of excellence both on and off the court.
